Where Are You Going is a bilingual comic (Arabic/English) by multi-displinary artist Afram exploring the absurd inner world of a stateless person. Published in 2022, the comic delves into the paranoid cityscape of Beirut from the perspective of someone who is both trapped within it and hounded by its authorities for documents and IDs that they do not possess. The comic takes the reader through a day in the life of the stateless protagonist as they oscillate between intense boredom and paranoia.
Through their striking artwork, Afram presents a cityscape of technological horror where robo-cops detain drivers, television news preaches hatred of foreigners and zombies are surveilled by CCTV. Each illustration builds upon the previous one to create an atmosphere of claustrophobia and fear interwoven with boredom and emptiness. Ultimately the titular question--Where Are You Going?--is posed again and again to the protagnoist by the authorities, by the city, and by himself as he tries to imagine a path out of his containment.
