SOUNDSCAPES

Record, contribute, and help fill out the soundscape of Lebanon!
If you have a phone and are walking down the street, record it and send it to us!
If you’re at the protests or stuck in traffic, record those beeps and send it to us!
Help us build and curate a collective audio archive that will live through these times with us.

CALL TO RECORD

Sound functions as an ephemeral medium. Sounds are easily lost as time passes and increasingly hard to recall. While an abundance of photos and writing about Lebanon’s October Revolution is easily accessible, sound is often featured only as secondary content that accompanies images; it doesn’t carry the authority of the image or word.

In an attempt to record and preserve the auditory landscape, Khabar Keslan’s Soundscapes Project is an attempt to create an audio map of Lebanon during the revolutionary period through collective participation. Evolving out of a desire to give more weight to the importance of sound, our goal is to create an archive of sounds that capture the current moment as it’s happening by recording in the field and soliciting submissions of audio clips from anyone able and willing to record and contribute.

Whether it’s protest songs, construction noise, informal speeches, honking, beeping or the clinking of coffee cups, Khabar Keslan wants the noise! We want to capture sounds small and large because we believe sound is a crucial part of our historical moment, and by allowing it independence we may glean new insights into how we’re negotiating space, social dynamics, and politics. But we can’t do it without people.
